Dr. Kenneth Hughes does a combination of walking and faster paced activities for cardiovascular health.

Walking certainly benefits cardiovascular health, improves metabolism, improves insulin sensitivity, and help maintain a healthy weight.  Walking on a treadmill within the confines or the home or a gym presents an even surface and allows modulation of pace and incline as well.  Walking certainly burns calories and can be repeated every day if necessary to bring about the necessary change in body composition.   The calories burned will depend upon the rate of walking, the length of time, and overall body mass.  On a flat treadmill, most individuals may be comfortable with a 2.5 mph to 3.0 mph pace.  The duration can vary, but 30 to 45 minutes is generally an effective amount of time.
